Job Summary
The Assistant Provost for Educational Technology Services provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the university’s educational technology services, with primary responsibility for managing the institution’s Learning Management System (LMS), Testing Center, Media and Video Services, and Instructional Technology Support. This position plays a crucial role in supporting faculty, staff, and students by providing innovative technology solutions that enhance teaching, learning, and assessment.

The ideal candidate will combine strong leadership skills with technical expertise and a deep understanding of academic environments. This role serves as a key liaison between academic units, IT, and faculty development teams to ensure the effective integration and continuous improvement of educational technologies across the institution.

Skills Required:

The Assistant Provost must successfully demonstrate the following:

  • Proficiency with Learning Management Systems such as Canvas or Blackboard
  • Familiarity with educational testing platforms and secure test administration tools
  • Understanding of system integrations between LMS and other campus technologies
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards, including ADA compliance and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Strategic planning and implementation of academic technology initiatives
  • Staff supervision and team development
  • Policy development and enforcement, particularly related to academic integrity, accessibility, and compliance.

Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a Master’s Degree, a professional degree, or the equivalent.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • A master’s degree in a field relevant to the duties of the position with a minimum of 7 years of management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in personnel management, budget control, scheduling, and assessment.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively across a range of stakeholders, including faculty members, staff, administrators, and students.
  • Demonstrate excellent written, oral presentation and communication skills.
  • The ability to communicate an in-depth understanding of how educational technology supports pedagogy.
  • Preference will be given to internal candidates.
Other Qualifications
To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Administration
  • Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational technology initiatives aligned with institutional goals.
  • Develop and manage policies, procedures, and best practices related to the use of educational technology and digital learning tools.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff in Educational Technology Services, including LMS support and instructional designer teams, media and video teams, and Testing Center personnel.
  • Collaborate with academic departments, IT services, and faculty development centers to support pedagogical innovation.
Learning Management System (LMS) Oversight
  • Provide overall leadership for the administration, support, and enhancement of the university’s LMS (e.g., Canvas or Blackboard).
  • Ensure LMS stability, security, accessibility, and integration with other campus systems.
  • Manage LMS vendor relationships and coordinate updates, upgrades, and contract renewals.
  • Coordinate user training, documentation, and support for faculty and students.
  • Analyze usage data and feedback to improve user experience and instructional impact.

Testing Center Management
  • Oversee the daily operations of the university’s Testing Center, ensuring a secure, equitable, and accessible testing environment.
  • Develop and enforce policies and procedures for academic testing, placement testing, accommodations, and professional certification exams.
  • Ensure compliance with academic integrity policies and accommodations under ADA and other relevant guidelines.
  • Supervise Testing Center staff and maintain appropriate staffing, scheduling, and training.

Media & Video Services
  • Manage the life cycle of all classroom audiovisual (AV) equipment, including its installation, proactive maintenance, and regular refresh.
  • Supervise and mentor AV technicians and student workers, providing training and assigning duties for the daily operations of classroom and event support.
  • Design and implement training materials and programs to assist faculty and staff in effectively using classroom media and technology.

Instructional Technology Support & Innovation
  • Promote the use of instructional technologies and digital tools to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Stay current with trends and research in educational technology and assessment.
  • Lead pilot programs and evaluate emerging tools and platforms for potential adoption.
  • Work closely with faculty to design and implement technology-enhanced instructional strategies.

Budget & Resource Management
