Job Summary
The Texas Schools Project (TSP) at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) is seeking a Research Scientist to join our team. TSP is committed to conducting cutting-edge research in the field of education and strives to improve education outcomes and policies at local, state, and national levels. TSP operates the UTD Education Research Center (UTD-ERC), which makes administrative data from the Texas Education Agency, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and Texas Workforce Commission available for research to improve education in Texas.

The Research Scientist will primarily collaborate with faculty and senior researchers to develop, design, and implement education research. As a secondary role, the Researcher will also support the operation and administration of the UTD-ERC.
Minimum Education and Experience
A minimum of a PhD in a field directly related to research and a minimum of two years of experience/expertise as noted below.

  • PhD in Economics.
  • Demonstrated experience building, managing, and working with large, administrative data sets.
  • Two or more years of experience conducting research involving quasi-experimental designs, advanced statistical methods, and data interpretation.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., Stata or R) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience presenting complex research findings to nontechnical audiences such as clients, policymakers, and practitioners.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of ethical guidelines for research involving human subjects (IRB protocols) and FERPA
  • Experience and interest in qualitative research is a plus.
  • Experience in education research, data collection, or analysis is a plus.
  • Experience in educational administration or as a classroom teacher is a plus.
  • Knowledge of server administration and/or Linux is a plus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Builds student-level longitudinal data sets using records from the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Texas Workforce Commission, and other data sources.
  • Conducts descriptive, qualitative, quasi-experimental, and experimental analyses while collaborating with senior researchers and faculty in the design, planning, and execution of education policy research.
  • Translates complex research findings in the form of research reports, presentations, and policy briefs.
  • Develops and publishes academic papers based on study findings.
  • Builds TSP’s research agenda by co-leading the development of research and grant proposals.
  • Serves as the Principal Investigator (PI) on new externally funded research projects.
  • Builds and carries out our growing portfolio of externally-funded research support services such as writing ERC proposals, building analytic datasets, computing metrics, and conducting analysis.
  • Identifies potential new funders and collaborators for prospective research and builds TSP’s network of funding partners.
  • Train new TSP staff and students to work with ERC data.
  • Oversees the UTD-ERC FERPA review process that ensures that all information removed from the UTD-ERC server is FERPA-compliant.
  • Represents TSP and the UTD-ERC at meetings with key stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Presents research findings to a broad range of stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, and practitioners as well as our clients.
  • Supports technical aspects of the ERC program including processing data when received by THECB, setting up secure accounts for researchers, conducting FERPA reviews of output, and serving as a backup server administrator in the ADRIDM’s absence.
  • Ensures adherence to ethical guidelines and institutional policies regarding research involving human subjects.
