The Physics Department in the School of Natural Science and Mathematics at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) is seeking to fill three postdoctoral researcher positions affiliated with UTD’s W. B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences. The successful candidate will support ongoing research in magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, with the focus on plasma waves in Earth’s magnetotail region. The incumbent shall analyze particle and wave measurements from THEMIS spacecraft, and theoretically model electron precipitation driven by plasma waves in the magnetotail.
Minimum Education and Experience

Ph.D in a related field.

Preferred Education and Experience
It is highly preferable that the candidate holds a Ph.D. in space physics or a closely related field.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Construct a dataset of quasi-periodic emissions of electromagnetic whistler-mode waves from THEMIS observations;
  • Determine the main wave characteristics and estimate the electron resonant energies corresponding to wave-particle interactions;
  • Investigate correlations between whistler-mode wave intensities and plasma density fluctuations inferred from spacecraft potential measurements;
  • Analyze THEMIS plasma instrument (ESA) measurements and determine main characteristics of the electron population responsible for density fluctuations;
  • Compare theoretical estimates of electron precipitating fluxes at the resonant energies and characteristics of plasma density variations;
  • Prepare materials for conference/workshop presentations and journal publications.
