Senior Software Engineer, Performance & Resiliency
Software Engineering
Southlake, TX, USA
Location: Southlake, TX (Primary) | Ann Arbor, MI (Secondary)
Work Arrangement: On-site (4 days/week)
Position Type: Contract-to-Hire, Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship requirements.
About the Role
As a Senior Software Engineer on our Core Systems Performance Engineering team, you will drive performance, scalability, and resiliency initiatives across a high-throughput, low-latency financial trading platform. You will analyze complex distributed architectures, identify system and code-level bottlenecks, and implement solutions across client-side applications, backend services, gateways, and cloud infrastructure.
In this role, you will diagnose JVM behaviors, model high-volume production traffic, and translate deep diagnostic insights into concrete architectural enhancements, capacity plans, and code optimizations.
Responsibilities
· Design, develop, and maintain automated performance testing frameworks, load generators, and custom diagnostic tooling using Core Java, Python, and Unix shell scripts.
· Build mock services, harnesses, and test utilities to simulate real-world trading traffic and stress system capabilities.
· Profile and inspect distributed source code to detect execution bottlenecks, concurrency issues, memory leaks, and GC overhead.
· Partner with product managers, system architects, and engineering teams to define performance budgets, non-functional requirements, and service-level objectives (SLOs).
· Formulate comprehensive performance test plans, execute benchmark runs, and analyze client-to-backend system telemetry.
· Architect and implement resiliency patterns, including circuit breakers, traffic shapers, load balancing strategies, and automated failover mechanisms.
· Collaborate with production reliability teams to instrument applications, define key health indicators, and enhance real-time observability using enterprise monitoring stacks.
Minimum Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
· 5+ years of software development experience with Core Java/J2EE across both client and server layers, including Spring, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud ecosystems.
· 5+ years of experience engineering distributed, high-throughput, and real-time processing systems utilizing relational databases and messaging middlewares.
· Deep understanding of multi-threading, concurrency models, data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design patterns.
· Hands-on experience diagnosing JVM internals, including GC log analysis, heap profiling, memory leak detection, and thread dump inspection.
· Solid practical foundation in Linux environments and shell scripting.
· Direct experience implementing system resiliency patterns (e.g., rate limiters, circuit breakers, traffic shapers, graceful degradation).
· Hands-on experience with telemetry, metrics aggregation, and observability tools (e.g., Splunk, Grafana).
Preferred Qualifications
· Domain experience in financial services, electronic trading, market data feeds, or capital markets systems.
· Experience deploying, scaling, and profiling microservices on public cloud platforms (AWS or Google Cloud).
· Solid background in continuous delivery, DevOps pipelines, containerized deployments, and automated build processes.
· Familiarity with integrating modern AI developer productivity tools within IDE workflows (e.g., IntelliJ IDEA, VS Code).
Medical, dental, and vision insurance are available to qualified candidates who meet eligibility requirements.
