Our client is seeking and Outpatient Coder for a fully remote role.
About the Role
The Outpatient Coder is responsible for accurately assigning medical codes for all outpatient encounters, including clinic visits, same-day surgeries, and diagnostic services. This role involves reviewing medical records and translating the diagnoses, procedures, and services into standardized codes. The Outpatient Coder ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines, payer policies, and coding best practices to facilitate proper claims submission and minimize denials
POSITION'S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review and analyze outpatient medical records to accurately abstract diagnoses, procedures, and services.
- Assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes according to official coding guidelines.
- Ensure accurate and compliant code assignment for all outpatient encounters to support proper reimbursement.
- Query physicians and other healthcare providers to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies.
- Utilize an Electronic Health Record (EHR) and coding software to perform coding tasks and maintain accurate records.
- Maintain a high level of accuracy and productivity, meeting established quality and production standards.
- Stay up-to-date with coding guidelines, regulatory changes, and payer rules related to outpatient coding.
- Collaborate with the revenue cycle team to address coding-related claim denials and answer questions about outstanding accounts.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Solid understanding of outpatient reimbursement methodologies, including APC and payer-specific guidelines.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and anatomy.
- Experience using electronic health records (EHR) and coding software.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Education and Experience:
- Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification is required.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of outpatient medical coding experience.
