Outpatient Surgical Coding Specialist (CVIR / GI)

About the Job

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Outpatient Surgical Coding Specialist to support hospital-based coding and billing operations within Health Information Management Services (HIMS). This role is responsible for ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely coding for Cardiovascular Interventional Radiology (CVIR) and Gastroenterology (GI) procedures in an acute care outpatient setting.

Responsibilities

• Perform accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT coding for hospital outpatient surgical cases, with a focus on CVIR and GI services
• Apply appropriate CPT modifiers and ensure proper sequencing of diagnoses and procedures
• Review documentation to ensure coding accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance
• Resolve NCCI and OCE edits, ensuring claims are compliant prior to billing
• Work within EHR and coding systems to abstract and assign codes
• Collaborate with clinical, billing, and revenue cycle teams to support clean claim submission
• Maintain productivity and quality standards for coding turnaround times
• Stay current on coding guidelines, payer regulations, and industry updates

Minimum Qualifications

• 3+ years of acute care hospital outpatient surgical coding experience
• Demonstrated experience coding CVIR and/or GI procedures
• Proficiency in EHR systems and coding software
• Advanced knowledge of:
  • ICD-10-CM
  • CPT coding and modifiers
  • NCCI (National Correct Coding Initiative) edits
  • OCE (Outpatient Code Editor) edits
• One of the following certifications:
  • CPC (Certified Professional Coder)
  • COC (Certified Outpatient Coder)
  • CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)
  • CIRCC (Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder)

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in:
  • Coding education, auditing, or QA review
  • Specialty or complex outpatient surgical coding
• Experience working in large acute care hospital systems
• Strong understanding of reimbursement methodologies and payer requirements
