Overview

We are seeking a motivated and driven Network Engineer to support advanced configuration, upgrades, and implementation of carrier-class networking equipment across a large, complex, multivendor nationwide data network. This role involves hands-on engineering, maintenance, and deployment of modern IP networking solutions, including virtualization platforms and software-defined networking (SDN) technologies.

The ideal candidate will play a key role in transitioning legacy VXLAN environments to next-generation eNSE platforms, contributing to strategic transformation initiatives and ensuring seamless network performance.


Key Responsibilities

Network Engineering & Implementation

  • Perform advanced configuration and operating system upgrades for Cisco and Nokia carrier-class networking equipment.
  • Engineer and implement IP networking build projects in collaboration with Capacity Planning, Design, and Operations teams.
  • Support transition from VXLAN architectures to eNSE platforms leveraging virtualization and SDN technologies.
  • Execute implementation activities for COINs and other deployment initiatives.

Maintenance & Change Management

  • Plan, prioritize, and schedule maintenance activities with cross-functional teams.
  • Execute network changes during scheduled maintenance windows while adhering to corporate standards.
  • Review Method of Procedures (MOPs) and validate automated outputs prior to execution.
  • Document all changes in the change management system and ensure required approvals are secured.

Network Deployment & Operations

  • Configure and deploy routers, switches, and network devices including:
    • Cisco CRS, NCS, ASR 9K, ISR, Nexus (3K/7K/9K)
    • Juniper MX series
  • Perform circuit turn-ups, migrations, and decommissioning of legacy systems.
  • Troubleshoot transport circuits and network connectivity issues.
  • Work remotely with field teams to install, configure, and troubleshoot data center equipment.

eNSE Fabric & Edge Network Support

  • Implement configuration changes for Intelligent Edge Networks, including:
    • SAP eNSE Fabric
    • Access eNSE Fabric
    • EPC migration to eNSE
    • ISP peering and edge connectivity
  • Perform routine maintenance (ACL updates, software upgrades) on spine, leaf, and fabric devices.

Automation & Tools

  • Utilize automation tools such as Python, NSO, DCNM, VTS, Pronghorn, and Nuage.
  • Use configuration comparison tools (e.g., UltraCompare, Diff Checker, Notepad++) for validation.
  • Leverage network monitoring tools to ensure system integrity before and after changes.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Participate in scheduled daytime meetings for planning, reviews, and project alignment.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams and remote support personnel.
  • Provide real-time updates during deployments and maintenance activities.
  • Support team members in monitoring (“overwatch”) roles during critical migrations and cutovers.

Work Schedule

  • Full-time role: 40 hours/week
  • Overnight shift (Monday–Friday, 8-hour shifts)
  • Occasional weekend work may be required

Required Qualifications (Must-Have Skills)

  • Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years of relevant work experience
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules, including night shifts
  • Strong work ethic, accountability, and attention to detail

Technical Expertise

  • Extensive knowledge of Layer 1 troubleshooting (copper and fiber: Cat5/6, SC, LC, FC, MPO)
  • Expertise in CLI for Nokia and Cisco platforms:
    • Nokia (7750/7706/7250)
    • Cisco (CRS, Nexus 3K/5K/7K/9K, IOS/XE/XR/NX-OS)
  • Strong understanding of Layer 1–3 networking and MPLS
  • Experience with:
    • IPv4, IPv6, TCP/IP
    • BGP, MP-BGP, OSPFv3
    • L2VPN, L3VPN, VRFs
    • QoS and Traffic Engineering
    • VXLAN and spine-leaf architectures
  • Hands-on experience with network virtualization technologies

Other Skills

  • Ability to interpret and implement engineering design documents
  • Proficiency in remote connectivity (console, Ethernet, fiber)
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for out-of-band management and cabling issues
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and coordinate with diverse teams
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong administrative and documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have Skills)

  • CCNA or CCNP certification
  • Experience with Nokia SR-OS platforms
  • Familiarity with cloud and virtualization technologies:
    • VMware, OpenStack, AWS, Azure
  • Knowledge of Linux systems, Ansible, Chef/Puppet, Docker
  • 5+ years of experience with large-scale data networks
  • Experience troubleshooting complex networking protocols and environments
  • Understanding of 3G/4G call flows
  • Proven ability to manage and deliver multiple technical projects successfully
