Job Description:
We are seeking a Senior Software Safety Engineer to support a high‑profile military aircraft program. This role focuses on software system safety for complex, safety‑critical avionics and aircraft subsystems, ensuring hazards are identified, assessed, and mitigated to acceptable risk levels across the full development lifecycle.
You will be part of a System Safety Team responsible for defining and executing system safety activities, collaborating closely with software, systems, test, suppliers, and government customers.
Responsibilities:
- Execute software system safety activities across development, test, integration, and release cycles
- Identify, analyze, and mitigate software‑related hazards using qualitative and quantitative methods
- Develop, maintain, and execute the System Safety Program Plan (SSPP)
- Perform Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Software Hazard Analysis (SHA)
- Provide safety expertise to software development, verification, and qualification teams
- Lead safety efforts on contractual deliverables with high technical quality and schedule adherence
- Coordinate safety activities with internal engineering teams, suppliers, leadership, and external customers
- Author and review technical safety reports and compliance documentation
- Mentor and guide junior safety engineers within the team
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline (Aerospace, Systems, Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, or Software Engineering)
- 8+ years of experience in safety‑critical software design, development, testing, or analysis
- Hands‑on experience supporting flight‑critical systems (Flight Controls, Engine Control, Fuel, Landing Gear, Displays, Stores Management, etc.)
- Full lifecycle experience with system/software safety analyses, standards, and tools
- Proven ability to lead technical efforts and interact with senior leadership and customers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with cross‑functional teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience implementing MIL‑STD‑882, ARP‑4761, ARP‑4754, DO‑178, IEEE 1228, or ISO 26262
- Safety‑critical software architecture, coding, or test background
- Software quality and compliance experience
- Knowledge of FAA and military certification processes
- Military or civilian flight experience
- Experience with government or defense contracts
- Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) exposure
- Statistical analysis methods for safety assessments
- Experience working with international suppliers or customers
