Location: Houston, TX (Remote with regional travel)
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire

About the Role

We are seeking a SCADA Field Engineer to support RTU/telemetry integration and field operations across our power generation fleet. You will spend your first 6–8 months working closely with a senior SCADA engineer, gaining hands-on mentorship before transitioning into full responsibility for field work, new site integrations, outage support, and ongoing reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, program, and troubleshoot RTUs for plant operations, dispatch requirements, upgrades, and reliability improvements.
  • Build and maintain data pathways between plant DCS and corporate EMS, ensuring complete mapping, scaling, and validation of signals.
  • Deploy, test, and repair communication protocols and links, including Modbus (serial & TCP), DNP3, serial channels, fiber, media converters, and modems.
  • Conduct point-to-point testing and field validation of analog, digital, and alarm signals; resolve scaling errors, timeout issues, and frozen points.
  • Collaborate with plant engineering/operations, transmission owners, vendors, and corporate IT/network/security teams to maintain SCADA telemetry health.
  • Support planned and unplanned outages, site projects, and new integrations; coordinate contractors and vendors when required.
  • Contribute to documentation, standard templates, as-built updates, and basic change-control practices across the fleet.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience configuring and programming RTUs in the field (e.g., SEL, Orion, Telvent/Schneider, or equivalent).
  • Strong working knowledge of Modbus (serial & TCP) and DNP3 protocols, including configuration and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with fundamental networking concepts: IP addressing, routing, ports, firewall/ACL coordination, and diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to interpret plant/DCS signals and align them with SCADA/EMS telemetry requirements.
  • Experience working in industrial or power plant environments (cabinets, I/O cards, control wiring, drawings, and standard safety practices).
  • Valid driver’s license with willingness to travel regionally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience collaborating with transmission owners and external contractors.
  • Exposure to fiber troubleshooting, serial-to-IP gateways, and media converters.
  • Awareness of NERC CIP processes (access controls, patching windows, evidence basics).
  • Ability to create point lists, as-built documentation, and basic HMI updates.
