Responsibilities
The Public Cloud Adoption Team (PCAT) is seeking a highly motivated Software Engineer to help drive the evolution of infrastructure management capabilities and build the future Engineering Platform for State Farm. In this role, you will contribute to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions—including OpenTofu—and support the expansion of foundational Platform Engineering capabilities.
As a member of Platform Engineering, you will collaborate across the enterprise to mature State Farm’s cloud adoption strategy and deliver secure, scalable platform services that accelerate application teams. The ideal candidate brings strong knowledge and hands-on experience with Open Tofu, AWS, Python, and modern cloud engineering practices.
Qualifications
In this role, you will:
- Drive product delivery, architecture, enablement, and support for core platform capabilities—building reliable platform services that are easy to consume and operate across the enterprise.
- Lead technical direction for enterprise IaC (OpenTofu) including the runtime provisioning environment, module strategy, standards, and guidance for internal developers.
- Build and evolve reusable platform “Golden Path” capabilities that support the future platform.
- Develop and mature high-quality IaC building blocks, including:
- OpenTofu modules (including inner-sourced modules) for core AWS Services
- Testing frameworks/tooling and expanded automated testing options for builder pipelines
- Clear documentation, usage guides, and best practices for IaC and related platform topics
- Research, recommend, and implement IaC strategy improvements that reduce risk and increase productivity, including:
- Continued evolution of enterprise IaC management
- Evaluation of comparable IaC approaches and languages (e.g., CloudFormation, ARM/Bicep, Pulumi)
- Identify opportunities to shift from “everyone writes IaC” to more centralized, automated platform capabilities, improving consistency, security, and time-to-value.
- Identify opportunities to use AI to automate tedious workflows and engineering tasks
- Streamline use of AWS Services across State Farm
We are looking for engineers who are excited to solve complex infrastructure and platform challenges through strong engineering practices, automation, and a customer-focused mindset. Your work will directly shape Core Platform Engineering and help enable the future Unified Insurance Platform, improving how teams provision, secure, and operate cloud infrastructure.
Applicants with the following would be an excellent fit for this position:
- Knowledge and experience with Cloud Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
- Knowledge and experience with Cloud technologies and Software Engineering in the cloud (AWS preferred, Azure & GCP considered), Terraform/Open Tofu, Python, and Go.
- Experience in Cloud Engineering , infrastructure, and information security.
- Knowledge of industry cloud concepts and offerings.
Desired Skills (not all required):
- Software Engineering and Infrastructure experience in Cloud Platforms (AWS / GCP/ Azure).
- Interest in and use of AI tooling to create solutions.
- Experience with various software development tooling and techniques.
- Passion for solving problems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong critical thinking.
- Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative agile team environment.
- Ability to quickly adapt to a changing environment.
- Commitment to software practices of continuous integration and automated testing.
